The Savvy Host: Menu Planning-Designing the Perfect "Nibble to Nosh" Ratio

People frequently ask me for my advice on planning the perfect menu for their cocktail party. Depending on your theme, specific dishes will vary, however here are some tips to keep in mind.

Design the perfect "Nibble to Nosh" ratio
Always make sure you have the following:

2-3 Bowl items
i.e. Olives, Nuts, Mixed Snacks
Strategically placed throughout the room, easily accessible to guests

Gourmet Cheese Display
i.e. Piave, Smoky Cheddar, Camembert and Stilton
Served at room temperature, most cheeses will taste amazing and allow for easier chunking/cutting/spreading/crumbling.
Enhancement: Garnish tray with tangy dried fruits/fruit spreads or honey.

1 Cold Nibble Options
i.e. Crudites (
Assortment of Raw Veggies), Chili-Rubbed Prawn Cocktail
Tray size depending on number of guests

2 Warm hors d' oeuvre Options

i.e. Mushroom Crostini, Brie & Spinach Stuffed Puff Pastry
The easier the item is to eat (neatly) with one hand, the better!

1-2 Heavy Selection
i.e. Crab Cakes w/Dijon Drizzle, Prosciutto wrapped Scallop Lollipops w/Sweet & Smoked Paprika
Filling enough to satisfy, yet portable

1-2 Sweet Options
i.e. Lemon Curd and Mixed Berry Fruit Tarts, Assorted Cocoa Truffles
Provide chocolate for the chocolate people and fruit for the fruit people...or just put smiles on the faces of those who like both!

Bon Appetit!!!
