New Savvy Feature: Wine and Fuss

This is a new feature on EPOTLA exploring the often intimidating and misunderstood world of wine.

Wine and Fuss
Wine Speak
Have you ever attended an event an overheard conversations about wine that sound like this, "What an interesting bouquet of peach, pepper and apples" or "This Merlot isn't as full bodied as one would expect." Bouquets and bodies aren't words that most people associate with a beverage, but my friends, this is common wine speak. Here are a few standard terms you'll hear wine aficionados throw around (good to know so you won't rush to find a priest when you hear someone classify a wine as tannic).

Body: The sensation of weight when you have wine in your mouth (light, medium or full)
Dry: The lack of sweetness
Bouquet: The scent of older wines
Aroma: The scent of younger wines
Fruity: Wine that smells and tastes like fruit, sweet or dry
Soft: A smooth wine
Crisp: A pleasant, yet acidic wine
Tannic: Red wine that leaves the mouth dry
Finish: The sensation you get from a wine after its swallowed

Crystal's Pick: Monbazillac 2003, Duc de Castellac (Monbazillac, France)
I'll be the first to admit, I'm guilty of a severe wine crime. I drink dessert wines for dinner...and you know what, oh well. The only exception to my repeat felonies is Monbazillac, which I only drink at its appropriate time. Uber sweet, lovely and soft with a honey like consistency, this is hands down one the most decadent indulgences you'll ever experience.
